Kylie Cooper, “Hands Up, Don’t Shoot,” The Daily Pennsylvanian

ABOUT THE PROJECT: Published June 8, 2020.

A protester holds his hands behind his head in front of a line of police as demonstrators around him shout “Hands up, don’t shoot!” during a protest for George Floyd in Philadelphia, Pa. on June 1, 2020.

”Many of the Black Lives Matter protest photos I’ve seen are of people holding signs, white allies, or depict violence. I think this photo is impactful because it uses pure emotion to show the heart of the movement: protecting innocent Black lives. The angle of the photo looks up on the subject in a way that gives him power, and his gaze is solemn and unflinching.”

RUNNER UP: Kylie Cooper, “Counter/Protesters,” The Daily Pennsylvanian

Jadenne Radoc Cabahug, “Teens are warning each other about sex trafficking on TikTok. Here’s why the videos could do more harm than good,” KUOW 94.9 FM

ABOUT THE PROJECT: During this time period, many teens on TikTok were falsely reporting and spreading misinformation about sex trafficking. I know within the sex trafficking community, many people found this to be harmful to their real-life experiences. I wanted to be able to stop fear-mongering on social media and to understand the experiences of actual survivors. This story was shared throughout communities and organizations in the Seattle area for people to understand how misinformation and disinformation on social media can spread quickly on social media. This story also won two awards, second place in the Society of Professional Journalists regional awards Audio: Feature, Hard News category and a runner up finalist in the New York Times Third Annual Podcast Contest.
