Lifetime Achievement Award: Connie Chung
Connie Chung, a pioneer news anchor and reporter, was the first Asian to anchor any network news broadcast and in 1993 she became the first woman to co-anchor the CBS Evening News, the flagship news broadcast on CBS. She won three national Emmys, a Peabody Award, and numerous other awards during her 30-year career covering national and international news.
ABOUT THE RECIPIENT: Constance Yu-Hwa "Connie" Chung is one of the most accomplished journalists of her generation and an icon of representation for Asian Americans. Chung was the first Asian American to anchor a network newscast, at CBS. Her interview skills are legendary – Richard Nixon, Bill Gates, Magic Johnson and Tonya Harding are among the public figures who spoke to her at pivotal moments in their lives. For many Asian American families who had never seen faces like theirs on television, she was an inspiration; many girls born during her 1990s run on CBS Evening News bear her name. Now, she’s the author of a memoir, Connie, where she delves into her storied career as the first Asian woman to break into an overwhelmingly white, male-dominated television news industry.
