Hannah Ly, “Ocean to table, Fish to Families: A sustainable solution to San Diego's food insecurity,” Self published

ABOUT THE WORK: This work brings to light the previously uncovered relaunch of the Fish to Families program this year, spotlighting a food initiative that not only addresses food insecurity but also contributes to the local economy. The multimedia story emphasizes the uniqueness of the initiative's approach, actively collaborating with local fishers, chefs, community organizers and non-profit organizations like Feeding San Diego and Asian Pacific Islander Initiative.

By showcasing the program's multifaceted impact, from providing nutritious meals to vulnerable populations to minimizing food waste through collaboration with local farms, the story goes beyond traditional metrics. It also sheds light on the overlooked Filipino American Veterans Association (FAVA) Hall, a program predominantly run by volunteers and donations, offering them valuable coverage and recognition for their presence in the San Diego community.

Hannah Ly is a journalist and editor based in Santa Clara, California. Her mission is to empower individuals and communities through impactful storytelling, in both reporting and editing. During her tenure as news editor of The Daily Aztec, San Diego State University’s student newspaper, she focused on fostering meaningful dialogue within the campus community and beyond. This summer, she serves as a multiplatform editing intern at the Los Angeles Times as part of the Dow Jones News Fund program.

Judges’ comments: “This was a well-reported story that explored other themes beyond the greater impact of the Fish to Families initiative, such as the state of food insecurity in San Diego today, as well as the impacts on AAPI communities. The many multimedia elements also made the story interesting and brought it to life.”
